We all know flowers for their shapes, colors, and smells. When we think about picking out flowers for a loved one or friend, we only think about what color or flower that person might like. But did you also know that all different kinds of flowers have all kinds of different meanings! When picking out flowers, there are many other things you can think about besides just the color!
Although there are hundreds of different kinds of flowers and meanings, knowing the basics and the meanings of the most popular kinds of flowers is all you really need to know to understand flower language. This can also be referred to as floriography, which simply means the language of flowers.
Although different kinds of flowers have different meanings, different colors of specific flowers. Most popularly, roses come in all different colors, and all mean different things. Red roses symbolize passionate, romantic, and deep affection, they normally convey the message of “I love you”. White roses can mean purity of something and new beginnings. Yellow roses mean joy, care, and friendship. Pink roses symbolize admiration and gentleness. Sunflowers are very warm and are normally represented to show loyalty to one and/or adoration. They are overall very positive flowers and mean good things
Tulips come in all different colors, which mean all different things, but in general, tulips mean a deep love towards one and charity.
Daisies are similar to white roses in their meaning, they mean innocence and the purity of one. Daisies are also a symbol of new beginnings
Lilies can mean something being reborn and showing passion and purity.
Lavender is similar to roses in being mainly a romantic meaning. They mean love at first sight and being devoted to one another.

Most flowers also have meanings just based on their color, not just what type of flower they are. Red means love and respect, orange can mean admiration and/or gentleness, while yellow means joy or admiring your friendship with someone. Green normally means good health in something, and blue means peace and calmness, almost like the tranquility of a situation or group. Lavender means grace and elegance, which is similar to purple, as both mean feminine beauty. Pink is similar to lavender in meaning grace, but it also can mean gentleness. Last but not least, white symbolizes purity, innocence, and sometimes reverence.
Also, flowers can be occasion based! When looking for flowers for certain people or certain occasions, you can always look for specific kinds. For example, romance and/or for a loved one, you would want to get red roses, which symbolize deep affection. For friendship, yellow flowers like sunflowers and yellow roses represent love for a friend and passionate care.
