What is a Great White Shark?
The Great white shark also known as Carcharodon corcharías is the world's largest known predatory fish. That can be reaching lengths of up to 20 feet and weighing over 5,000 lbs.
Great White Shark characteristics
Appearance- torpedo shaped bodies, gray topsides, white underbellies.
Size and lifespan- The female sharks are actually larger than the male sharks, while they typically mature at 15-16 feet. As for the males it’s at 11-13 feet. Where they can live up to 70 years to even more.
Habitat- They can be found in all of the cold temperature and tropical coastal waters practically near South Africa, Australia, northern US and even in California.
Hunting- They would often hunt from attacking below, where they can be breaching the surface and feed from the surface to the seafloor.
Why are they called “The Great White”?
As to how it got its name is referring to their white underbellies. As for the “Great” it’s just referring to their massive size along with their power as well. It got its name from their appearance.

Well comflauged- Something that you might’ve not known was that they have great camouflage skills where their grey and white bodies were designed to help tjhem and sneak up on unsuspecting prey. For example if they were to be swimming below the grey on top of their body will easily blend with the rocky sea floor. But if they were to be swimming above you there white bellies will then blend into the sunlight.
