On Tuesday February 24th, the girls varsity basketball team honored their 2 seniors, Ava Demark and Aliana Martinez, at their game against Lakeshore. The girls ended up taking the win against Lakeshore 36-31. Before the game started the senior night festivities took place. I talked to senior Ava Demark about her last game at home. I asked her what was the best part of the whole game in her opinion. She told me, “The walk out with my parents and my buzzer beater shot at the end of the second quarter going into halftime.” Both seniors walked to center court accompanied by their families. They were met at half court by two of their teammates who gave them each gift to show their appreciation for all they do. When I asked myself the same question the thing that made the night so special was after the national anthem when we all took off our warm ups and showed the coaches our fake tattoos. During the jv game we all went to the bathroom and put on fake tattoo sleeves without telling any of our coaches. Their reactions were priceless and all they could do was laugh. I also asked Ava what the most emotional moment was for her in that game. She told me,” Walking out with my parents and having the announcer announce my name one last time.” I think my most emotional moment was when my little sisters ran up to me and jumped into my arms because they mean so much to me and to see them so happy and proud of me was everything.
The atmosphere of this game was so different from every other game. Our team felt way more connected, united, and happier. All of us were on the court giving it our all and having fun while doing it. Our coach was also happy with the way we hustled, performed, and stayed in the game especially because last time we played Lakeshore we unfortunately lost. The celebration was bittersweet and all the fans came to support. At this game there was even a student section cheering on the team.
The girls varsity team gets ready for their first round of districts Wednesday March 4th at 7:00pm at Detroit Country Day High School. Be there to support your lady rams in districts.
