Sabrina Carpenter has continued to take back the fun pop vibe of modern music. She has released 7 studio albums since 2015 with Eyes Wide Open, and her most recent song/release being on Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, on the song “The Life of a Showgirl”. Sabrina stays very consistent with releasing music and listening to her fans and their opinions. She is currently touring around North America, with her upcoming cities being New York at MSG, Nashville at Bridgestone Arena, and Toronto at Scotiabank Arena.
I interviewed 5 LHS students on Sabrina and asked what their top 5 favorite songs were and which lyric of hers they connect with and resonate with the most.
My first interview was with senior, Amelia Jones. When asked what her top 5 songs were, she had some already prepared and ready to go. She answered with “Nobody’s Son”, track #6 off of Man’s Best Friend, “My Man on Willpower”, track #3 off of Man’s Best Friend, “emails i can’t send”, track #1 off of emails i can’t send, and “Please Please Please”, track #2 off of Short n’ Sweet. These answers go to show that Sabrina has really done a good job with all of her new releases. When I asked which lyric of Sabrina’s she relates to the most and why, she answered, “Don’t smile because it happened, cry because it’s over.”, from “Don’t Smile”, because “I think especially right now in my life, that’s how i’m feeling, like i’m not feeling happy about things ending, i’m feeling sad about things ending, so that lyric really resonates a lot with me in my soul.” Amelia’s response is a feeling that a good chunk of seniors can relate to this year. As sports come to an end, last first days, and “last events” that us seniors have all grown to love and appreciate her at Lamphere.
Senior, Abby Ferris was the next person I interviewed about Sabrina Carpenter, and when I asked what her top 5 songs were, she took some time to think and gave me these 5 songs. “Tornado Warnings”, track #4 off of emails i can’t send, “Juno”, track #10 off of Short n’ Sweet, “15 Minutes”, track #13 off of Short n’ Sweet (Deluxe), “My Man on Willpower”, track #3 off of Man’s Best Friend, and “Manchild”, track #1 off of Man’s Best Friend. Abby generally has a lot of Sabrinas newer songs in her top 5, but still includes a treasure off of Sabrina’s 2022 album. I also asked Abby what her favorite lyric was from Sabrina’s discography and she answered with, “Do you want the house tour? I can take you to the first, second, third floor!”, and her reasoning was “I just think it’s so catchy, like every single time I hear it, i’m just like ‘Oh My God’, she is just so good on words, like her play on words…That is really my favorite thing about her, how she always give a play on words in all of her songs.” Abby’s favorite lyric is one that is extremely popular across social media, you can see people using the song to show off levels of their own house, workplaces, and even event centers with the hopes of advertising to people online.
My third interview was with junior, Sophia Minowa. Sophia waited to be interviewed for one of these stories so she could specifically be interviewed for Sabrina Carpenter. She thinks herself to be a very big fan of Sabrina’s. With that information, I asked her what her top 5 songs were and she happily answered with: “Dumb & Poetic”, track #8 off of Short n’ Sweet, “cindy lou who”, track #4 off Sabrina’s Christmas EP, fruitcake, “Vicious”, track #2 off of emails i can’t send, “Diamonds are forever”, track #8 off of Singular Act I, and “Couldn’t Make it Any Harder”, track #15 off of Short n’ Sweet (Deluxe). Sophia showcases a lot of diversity throughout these songs, dipping into a lot of Sabrina Carpenter’s different Eras. When I asked Sophia what lyric of hers she resonated with the most, I figured she would have a harder time finding one since there is so many, but she had an answer right off the rip. The lyric, “You used a fork once.”, from the song “things i wish you said”. Her reason behind this was, “Because, basically, it’s like, ‘you used a fork once’, and basically there is forks everywhere, and basically, when I something somewhere, it makes me think of you, and I can’t let anything go…” What I think Sabrina Carpenter was trying to get across with this lyric is that, she pays attention and notices little details that she wished her partner would’ve also picked up on, like using a fork… Needless to say, Sophia is a huge Sabrina fan!!
My last interview was with junior, Ava Wenner. When I asked Ava what her top 4 songs were, she gladly answered with: “because i liked a boy”, track #5 off of emails i can’t send, “Bed Chem”, track #6 off of Short n’ Sweet, “Dumb & Poetic”, track #8 off of Short n’ Sweet, and “When Did You Get Hot?”, track #8 off of Man’s Best Friend. When I asked Ava what lyric she most connected and resonated with from Sabrina’s discography, she told me “I got death threats filling up semi trucks, Tell me who I am, guess I ‘dont have a choice, all because I liked-”. Her explanation for this lyric was, “I feel like it relates to my personal experience with relationships, I get hate a lot just for who I like.” Ava was a great interviewee and was great to talk to!!
