Michigan’s Safe Schools Week is an annual event, typically held in October, to promote school safety through awareness and action. The state, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education and Michigan State Police, encourages schools to use the week for safety-related activities like conducting drills and reviewing procedures. The focus is on creating positive and secure learning environments by addressing aspects like physical security, mental health, and student well-being.
The week began with a message about the importance of collective responsibility for safety. A student-created suggestion box was at lunch for sharing ideas on improving school safety. On Tuesday, we learned about the importance of reporting online threats rather than sharing them. The Leadership Class wore campaign shirts with the phrase, “report, don’t repost”.
On Thursday, counselors hosted a lunchtime session on self-care, stress management, and recognizing warning signs of mental health struggles. A talk about mental health awareness was also spoken about over morning announcements. The week concluded with students and staff wearing school colors to show unity. At lunch, students signed a School Safety Pledge, enjoying music and treats, and entered into a raffle for prizes—symbolizing that when the community commits to safety, everyone wins. Through these events, Lamphere High underscores that safe schools are built on shared responsibility, open communication, and care for one another.
