Molly Long is a world-renowned choreographer. She owns her own studio in Orange County, California, called Project 21. Over the last couple of years, she’s gone viral on TikTok for the group dances she choreographs, for example: You Don’t Love Me, pop muzik, double dutch bus, just to name a few, but where did she start?
Early Life: Dance has been in Molly Long’s life since she was 3. She started at her mom’s dance studio called California Dance Academy. A couple of years later, California Dance Company merged with another studio called Dance Precisions. She would continue to dance/ teach there until she graduated high school.
Rise to Fame: While at the California dance company, she started getting choreography out into the world. At age 16, she choreographed 2 very well-known dances: My Boyfriend’s Back and Single Ladies. Single ladies in particular got a lot of backlash, and later on, a tv show called Dance Moms actually took a lot of inspiration from this piece and had almost the same costumes, just in a slightly different color. Nevertheless, both dances took the competitive dance world by storm and to this day are still very iconic and the start of when competitive dance really took off in popularity.
After she graduated, she started doing choreography around the country at different studios. She’s primarily taught on the west coast which has some of the greatest studios in the country.
Project 21: In 2015, she opened the doors to her own studio called Project 21. In the dance world, this studio is known as one of the top studios, along with Larkin Dance Studio and Club Dance Studio, just to name a few. Project 21 is in its 11th season and still kicking strong, and they’re known for their dance team, like precision, along with the unique choreography.
So far, for this season, the double dutch bus seems to be a fan favorite this season. I can’t wait to see which of hers becomes popular over the next couple of years.
