What is a leopard?
The Leopards or Panthera pardus which is a scientific name for a Leopard. They are also very highly adaptable medium sized cats. Being known for its muscular build that they tend to have. Leopards are considered being an apex predators that are founded in Africa and Asia. Since they are close to being on top of the food chain. A technique that they are able to use is that they primarily use stealth to ambush their prey when hunting.
Leopard’s characteristics:
Coats have spots that are golden-yellow to tawny fur covered in black “rosettes”, sleek and muscular with long tails for balance. They typically weigh 80-165lbs. They are said to be very skilled at climbing trees based on their body type.
Habitat- They mainly are to be found in rainforest, deserts, mountains and lastly in the savanna woodlands.
Diet- Since Leopards are carnivores, they will practically feed onto anything such as rodents to even birds and even a medium sized antelope.
Communication- Based on how they communicate with each other is that they produce like a raspy cough which can indicate presence, along with also being able to their roaring.
What are the differences between a Leopard and a Cheetah?
There would be a lot of people all over the internet who would then get a Leopard and a Cheetah confused. Which in a way is completely understandable to get some confusion on. Although there’s a primary difference between the two of them. Which is being their coat patterns on their body. A Cheetah has just rounded spots all over, meanwhile a Leopard has rosette-shaped spots. Another difference is their body shape, with a Leopard having a muscular body which is great for climbing. Then the Cheetah having a more of a slender body type which it’s perk is speed range.
Why are they known as “Silent Killers?”
Something that is interesting about Leopards is they are also known as “Silent Killers”. You might be wondering that it’s a silly name but being named like that, but actually has its purpose. Leopards are known to be masters of stealth. Which in many cases they are said to be relying much more on their camouflage. Along with their soft paw pads that can help them be able to move while being undetected by other animals. Which is a perk for them being able to help them hunt in stealth. As Leopards hunt at night, camouflage makes them nearly invisible until they are able to strike out in catching their prey.

When hunting, the tip of a leopard’s tail may twitch- The tip of the tail is thought to be a distraction of the prey. So that it can help the Leopard to have successful hunting experiences.
Leopards have been known to eat more than 90 different species of prey- Leopards also tend to be eating 90 different types of prey. Which are such as Mammals that are Wildebeest, Baboons, Monkeys, Gazelles, Hares and Rodents. Species that can be twice as big as a Leopard such as adult Eland, young Giraffes, Zebras. Also birds, reptiles such as Lizards, snakes, even Fish.
Leopards can carry prey twice their body weight up into trees- Something that is now very well known is that Leopards can be able to carry prey that is twice their bodyweight. They are typically to hunt for medium sized that can weigh up to 10-40kg. But on some rare occasions they would hunt such as young Giraffes.
Leopards mark their territory by scent-marking, roaring and tree-scratching. Being to how Leopards are being able to mark their territory is just by scent marking, roaring along with tree scratching. Which helps the other Leopards know that area is already occupied.
