Every single varsity sports team has a freshman on their team this year. At Lamphere High School, we have many athletes, and a part of this number consists of our freshman class. We will be taking a deeper dive on what it’s really like to be a freshman on a varsity sports team. Everyone’s story is different, but we have talked to a few athletes from different fall sports to get a closer look and their opinion on their sports. 

The first person that we interviewed was Karter Hayden. Karter is in 9th grade and a part of the Varsity Boys soccer team. He wears #2 and plays midfield for the Rams. On Monday September 15th the Rams went to Clawson high school to play the Trojans. The Rams were ultimately  defeated by the Trojans 2-3. Karter was one of the two people to score that game. When we asked him how it felt scoring his first goal in a high school game he said,”It felt good to be able to contribute to the team.” After talking about his performance that game we also asked him how he was going to continue to improve throughout the next few years. Karter responded with,”I will go to other practices outside of school practices and I will stay late after our practices to get extra work.” 

The next person we got to interview was Nolan Rogensues. He is the only freshman on the Varsity tennis team. He is the Doubles 4 of Lamphere Varsity Tennis. He has won 3 straight matches, and he seems to be getting hot with his play. When we asked him what it was like being the only freshman on Varsity he said,”It’s challenging but it’s fun hanging out with seniors and getting to know them and maybe I’ll be as good as them one day.” We also asked Nolan how the upperclassmen have helped him so far this year. Nolan says,”Matt taught me how to follow through on my swing in tennis.” 

The last person that we interviewed was Amaree Foster. Amaree is number 88 on Varsity and plays a few positions. He plays tight end, wide receiver, and linebacker. Since football is so popular we asked Amaree what it’s like being a freshman on Varsity football. He said,”It’s definitely been fun but there is definitely more of a requirement. We get held to a higher standard.” Amaree’s older brother Mychael also plays on the Varsity team. We asked Amaree what it’s like to be able to play with his brother. He replied with, “I get to laugh at him so that’s the best part but we get to have each other’s backs on a deeper level. If someone hits him, I get to hit them back.”
