Powder Puff sign up has begun. Let’s look at the previous and current state of the games.
Powder Puff is a lasting tradition at Lamphere and across the nation. The idea of Powder Puff is that the boys who might typically play football will come and cheer in place of the girls, and the girls will go and play for the football team. In most instances, the girls play flag football and divide the teams up as they see fit. The guys on the cheer team would get divided into stunt groups and start learning school cheers along the basics of stunting. Some schools have gone as far as making the boys perform halftime routines or choreographed dances! Powder puff is usually a hit and tends to go viral on social media across many platforms.
Here at Lamphere, Mrs. Rachel Vickers is the leader and organizer of Powder Puff and has completely re-done it! Last year the students took on the game and cheered during the homecoming pep rally, and it didn’t seem to hit as hard since people were leaving early and not engaged in the games or the activities. A theme that I’ve seen over the 3 years I’ve done powder puff is that the students don’t really come out to support the students, and as the seniors graduate, the classes have gotten less and less spirited… And I think that is where Mrs. Vickers was looking when she went into the revising our powder puff game.
For this year’s game, she is combining the freshmen and seniors to form “the blue team” and the Juniors and Sophomores to form “the white team”. The combination of the grades to make one big team eliminates the problem of separate grades not having enough players on the field; this is a problem that Mrs. Vickers has faced a few times in the past. It’s also gotten rid of needing 3 separate games following that tournament-style format; instead, she is making the two teams play a full game of football. Athletes will be playing 4 quarters, taking a full halftime which includes a halftime performance, and following the standard flag football rules. Also, the game will no longer be played during the pep rally; it will be its own evening event during the week of homecoming on October 8th.
Get ready LHS students, this is gonna be a good one!
