For this year’s marching band season, the show is titled “Press Start.” Along with the new show, we will introduce new color guard uniforms that reflect the theme of video game nostalgia.
To speak on the topic, we interviewed color guard captain, Nina Deych, on her opinions on the new uniforms. She had both good and bad to say, along with Chloe Vaughn, a member of the team. They both agreed that the uniforms were comfortable and matched the new theme very well. With the title “Press Start,” it is quite obvious that their theme is related to some sort of video game topic with the uniforms having pieces from games such as Tetris, a video game popular around the late 80’s to early 90’s, on the sleeves. The incorporation of these specific video games ties the theme together very well , and with the inclusion of the bright colors it’s a clear nod to the old video game nostalgia as well.
The members we spoke to also highlighted how much more universal these uniforms are compared to those in the past. Previously, the boys’ uniforms consisted of “sweats and a t-shirt,” as the two mentioned. This year, however, the uniforms are designed to be suitable for all genders. On the downside, some of the girls expressed a desire for the outfits to be more “flowy,” missing the skirts they wore previously. Nevertheless, they appreciate having two options this year: pants and a jacket or pants and a tank top, which is a choice not provided before.
Additionally, it was pointed out that the uniforms are not yet complete, missing some key elements. The girls suggested adding rifle and saber cases to complement this year’s costumes, which would help maintain the video game theme. They noted that they wished the costumes better aligned with this year’s props designed for the field. Despite these minor criticisms, the group generally loves the new uniforms, which help them stand out rather than blend in.
With these costumes they hope to capture the attention as they march into the new 2025 season with their first competition on September 27th. We wish them luck in their new eye-catching attire; this look is essential to the final look of the puzzle!
