The start of a new school year is filled with excitement and anticipation. As high schools across the country recently completed their first week, students are beginning to embrace their independence and take significant steps toward adulthood. This transition can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming, raising important questions: Where does one begin? What are their plans after high school?
At Lamphere High School, both incoming and returning students have navigated two weeks of classes, and many are expressing mixed feelings about their experiences thus far. To provide insight into student perspectives, we have gathered a selection of opinions to share.
From Kaylee Stong, senior: “One of the biggest feelings I’ve had this year is regret, wishing I can redo it all over again, getting upset at my younger self because she didn’t have the same drive and motivation towards education, a future, relationships, like I do now. It’s a truly hard thing to process, because you see classmates your age having this huge resume of all these achievements on their record that will look great for college. Then you look at yourself and it’s nothing like that at all. In your underclassmen years you truly grow so much more than you think and there are times in your life when you’re making mistakes and taking chances that make you fall into failure, but it shapes you into the person that you are going to become in your young adult years.”
From Madison Hayter, senior: “I’m Madison, but everyone calls me Maddie. In the beginning, I would say that it’s an unreal feeling because you have the feeling of enjoyment and the feeling of knowing things are gonna be your last.”
From Kaitlyn Carson, senior: “I’m already tired of school, but I’m glad it’s my last year because I’m experiencing a lot of final stuff. My last first day of school, last high school football games, etc etc.”
From Ryan Zu, a junior: “10/10. It’s going good, I’m already getting really tired from waking up every morning. Get a good score on the SAT.”
From Kylee Holtkamp, junior: “8/10. It’s going okay, the class work is a bit hard, but I can push through. Pass.”
From Taylor Kilburn, junior: “8/10. I feel like this year has been good so far. It feels different getting back into the school routine; I like my classes though. Get involved, do good academically, and get a good SAT score.”
From Kaitlyn Peasgood, sophomore: “6-7/10. It’s going pretty good. Good teachers. Trying to get good grades and stay out of drama.”
From Abbi Welsh, sophomore: “8/10. It’s been a lot with classes, but I’ve been good with my grades. Dance has been going well. Keeping my grades up.”
From Justice Gossman, freshman: “5/10. This school year has been hard. Getting assignments everyday and mixing in golf. It’s hard to keep up. I have made new friends and my old friendships are fading. It just feels like when you go into high school everything changes. The days feel longer and it feels so chaotic because there are so many more students. There seems to be less bullying because we’re all spread apart and don’t even pass each other some days. My favorite part of the school year so far is geometry because Mrs. Ruwart is so kind and I also love math.”
From Mackenzie Klingingsmith, freshman: “8. So far school is very easy, not too much homework and if there is it is quick. It’s very fun and there’s not much drama, it’s just calm. I also love all of the school spirit so far and how sweet all of my teachers are. I’m trying to enjoy it while it is easy.”
From Mrs.Villerot, teacher: “9/10 so far! My favorite part of the school year so far is having News Staff as an elective, um, and I love seeing the seniors and remembering that we started at LHS together.”
