Our editors Ethan, Troy, Michael, Ellie, Kaylee, Madison, and Evelyn.
In our News Staff class, we run 6 different sections or segments. For each segment, we have at least one editor that reviews all of the pieces submitted to that section. These editors are there to look over each and every piece before it gets submitted to be published. After it is submitted to be published then Troy, our editor in chief, or Mrs.Villerot will look over it one last time and then if it is suitable for the week’s cycle they will publish it. I talked to all of our editors to get more information on how this class is able to run so smoothly and publish every week. The first person I talked to was our editor in chief, Troy Hill. I asked what the basic description of his job was and he told me, “What I do is overview everyone’s pitches and stories to scan for errors and flaws and publish them every week. I also overview every other editor.” Since Troy overviews everything I asked him what his vision is for this newspaper during his time as editor in chief. He told me, “I think that we need to reach some sense of uniformity and routine that reflects our school’s values and our character.” Troy has very high hopes for our News paper and the articles we are writing but he also knows that since it’s a new class there are a few kinks that still need to be worked out. When I asked him what his favorite part of his role was he told me, “I get to have more of a manager role and I get to see how everyone’s minds work in a creative sense and it’s nice to see people work together to create stories.”
Next I interviewed our opinion editor Evelyn Dempsey. I asked her what strategies she uses to ensure the drafts that get sent to her become quality and accurate pieces. She told me, “I simply make sure things are accurate, so simply fact check what is submitted to our newspaper. The quality is a little more difficult, but still it is just reviewing what is submitted and correcting any errors.” Another thing I asked Evelyn was how she handles any conflicts she might face. Evelyn said, “I stay calm in conflicting situations, that is usually most important in my opinion. I do not usually have any conflicts because my segment is opinion, and people have the right to their own as long as it does not involve hate or discrimination. When one occurs I simply fix whatever is brought to my attention and do not turn it into a whole situation.”
The next editor I got the chance to talk to was Kaylee Stong. She is the editor of the features segment. When I got the chance to talk to Kaylee I asked what her vision for her portion of her newspaper was and she said, “ To put out good information to our school that needs to be recognised.” To get more information about what our editors like most I asked what her favorite part was about being an editor. Kaylee told me, “Knowing that my class and my teacher trusts me to lead a part of our newspaper.”
The next person I interviewed was Ethan Bauer. Ethan is the editor for the multi-media section and the co-editor for the sports section. When I asked him to explain what his role consists of in his own words he said, “A lot of good writing and a lot of good fun.” Since Ethan is the editor of two different sections I asked him if he enjoys the topics that he is the editor for and he told me, “I do I wish we could do a little more sometimes but it’s very fun there’s a lot of freedom and I can let people know when I like or dislike their topics.”
After that I interviewed Madison Hayter. Madison is the Co-editor of the sports section alongside Ethan. With the chance I got to talk to Madison I asked her what a typical class period looks like for her as an editor. She told me,”I write my own stories and then I go through others to make sure that they sound professional.” When she told me that she also wrote her own stories on top of being an editor I asked her how she managed her time between writing her own pieces and editing the others. She said, “ I finish my own stories and then during my free time or when I’m done I go through others to make sure that they’re okay.”
The last person that I got to interview was Michael Aramouni. Micheal is our News editor. When I asked what he thought the most important thing was about his role as an editor he told me, “Probably choosing what what people write about and what what won’t get written about.” I then asked how he liked doing this job so far and he said, “It can be a little much especially since I have to spend publishing days looking at other people’s articles instead of reviewing mine, but it’s pretty fun.”
Throughout our entire class we have many many leaders but these kids stood out. Without them our class would not run as smoothly as it does. All of these editors allow us to publish our articles every week. We thank all of our editors and Mrs. Villerot for making our class amazing!
