Mr. Kobus
Mr. Mike Kobus is more than just the detention guy here at Lamphere High School. He’s a son of immigrant parents from Poland, a brother, a husband, a father to one daughter and a grandfather to two grandsons who are 12 and 13 years old. He is a soccer coach for his grandsons team, a basketball coach at Farber Hebrew Day School and even a baseball coach at Milford High School. Mr. Kobus spent 19 years in the Lamphere Basketball program, and 7 years in the Lamphere Baseball program. He’s a graduate of Harper Woods Notre Dame, and University of Detroit. He retired from General Motors after 33 years of being a manager in finance giving him a little more free time. He fills all that free time doing things he loves like going and watching his grandson’s competitive ski, playing a round of golf, watching the Tigers play or catching a Toronto Maple Leafs game. Since he lives in White Lake with his wife of 46 years we asked what time he wakes up in the morning. He said, “ I’m up at 4am every day and I’m drinking a Mountain Dew by 4:01.” Growing up, Mr.Kobus was a very busy kid: he was a Polish dancer for 12 years, he won 10 free half gallons of ice cream, and even had the opportunity to to dance in front of President Johnson and the First Lady. When he wasn’t dancing, he was most likely busy playing football, basketball or baseball. One of his core childhood memories was when the Pope visited Michigan in 1987. He had the opportunity to work with the FBI, standing at the corner of I-75 and Holbrook in Hamtramck, he witnessed a car run through the barrier in an attempt to get to the Pope.
